Some important information for Coordinators regarding the 2010 implementation

1           Start up date for the 2010 classes

The official start-up date for the Kha Ri Gude classes is 1 June 2010. The 2010 programme will run according to the same six-monthly schedule that we followed in 2009. This means that volunteer stipendary payments will be made for classes held from 1 June to 31 November 2010.  It is important for logistical and administrative reasons that the implementation of the Campaign is standardised across the country.

All the materials will be delivered to your designated drop off points during the first 3 weeks of May. The Kha Ri Gude office will contact you and/or the relevant supervisor to confirm dates and times for drop-offs.

2           The delivery of certificates

During the first two weeks of May, we will be sending each coordinator batches of certificates for those learners who “passed” during 2008 and 2009. Coordinators will need to announce on their local radio stations where learners can collect their certificates. This will be especially important for those learners who attended classes in 2008.  You will also receive Kha Ri Gude certificates of appreciation for each of the volunteers who submitted their learners’ LAPS last year (2009). The learner certificates will be batched accroding to coordinator and supervisor.

As we will be sending out nearly 850 000 certificates for volunteers and learners who “passed”, this should be regarded as an important opportunity for advocacy in your districts. You could plan media and publicity around your handing out the certificates to successful learners. It is important that you use the opportunity to inform the general public of the achievements of the learners and also of the important contribution made by more than 40 000 volunteers across South Africa.  This kind of publicity will also motivate your new 2010 learners.

3           The May count down to the start of the classes

Please ensure that you use the month of May to check that:

·         all VEs have 18 learners

·         all registration forms are submitted

·         all the fields on the forms are correctly filled in

·         all VEs banking details are correctly filled in on their registration forms

·         all ID numbers on forms are written correctly (so as to prevent problems when the Department of Home Affairs checks these numbers)

4           What should you do in the week prior to the start-up of the classes?

·         Complete the training of your supervisors and ensure that they train their VEs

·         Ensure that all VEs know what to do on the first day of their classes

·         Show them, once again, how to fill in their registers

·         Check that they are able to manage their LAPS

·         Let VEs hand out books to their learners

·         Give learners a motivational talk informing them that by joining the programme they have made a commitment to attend each and every class up to the end of the programme.

We trust that you will work towards making this a very successful year and that more learners will complete the programme and become literate and numerate.

With best wishes

Prof Veronica McKay
